ONE LOVE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ‘MY PLAN’ MOBILE APPLICATION TO COMBAT RELATIONSHIP VIOLENCE

The Foundation’s Second Mobile App Serves as Safety Decision Aid for Women Facing Violence in their Intimate Relationship

Baltimore, Md. – The One Love Foundation today announced the launch of the One Love MyPlan mobile application for smartphones. The One Love MyPlan app, a safety decision aid for survivors of Relationship Violence, determines if a relationship is unsafe and helps to create the best action plan by weighing an individual’s unique characteristics and values. In addition, the MyPlan app provides a safety decision aid for friends who are concerned about the safety of a female friend’s relationship. The One Love MyPlan app comes in addition to the One Love Danger Assessment app launched in 2012, and is the latest tool in the One Love Foundation’s “Be 1 for Change” initiative, with a mission of ending Relationship Violence through education and technology.

The One Love MyPlan app for iPhone and Android is available on the One Love Foundation website at JoinOneLove.org. In partnership with Loveisrespect.org, the One Love MyPlan app provides access to trained advocate support 24/7 through an embedded live chat function and takes users through four phases:

1) My Relationship – gathering information about the relationship
2) My Safety – risk assessment for the user
3) My Priorities – ranking of the users priorities when making a safety decision
4) My Plan – personalized safety plan and information on available resources.

The One Love MyPlan app was created based on over 10 years of National Institutes of Health and Center for Disease Control and Prevention funded research by Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing professor Dr. Nancy Glass and her team. According to research, every year 3-4 million women in the U.S. are abused and 1,500-1,600 are killed by their abusers. Development and research for the One Love MyPlan app took place at numerous locations throughout the country, including Johns Hopkins University, Arizona State University, University of Missouri-Columbia and Oregon Health and Science University. Participants of the study were college-aged females, ages 18-25, whom experienced Relationship Violence while in college and male and female friends (ages 18-25) who had a female friend experience relationship violence. The results showed that college-aged women and their friends would respond positively to a technology-based safety decision aid, such as the One Love MyPlan app, that could be accessed from smartphone or other mobile devices.

“The One Love Foundation continues to make strides towards providing teens and young adults with the most up to date and safest tools available, to help understand and combat Relationship Violence,” said Sharon Love, mother of Yeardley Love and co-founder of the One Love Foundation. “With the support and expertise of partners like Dr. Glass, we are able to continue furthering our mission to end Relationship Violence by getting these easy to access tools in the hands of young people who could be in a dangerous situation.”

In 2014 the One Love Foundation will unveil, its currently in development, digital workshop furthering their continued efforts to end Relationship Violence through education and technology.
